NEW YORK, Sept. 19, 2007 -- eMusic today launches a new optional client application that solves common download problems and makes tracks easy to find on a PC or Mac. eMusic Remote syncs with the three most popular media libraries – iTunes, Windows Media Player and Winamp -- automatically moving customers’ downloads to their preferred media library for easy transfer to digital music devices. The application provides an all-in-one browsing and downloading experience for the popular eMusic store. It is based on open source technology that works cross-platform (Windows, Linux and Mac OS X) and is intended as a foundation for external development and customization.

eMusic Remote supports eMusic’s existing music store as well as its new audiobooks service, which launched yesterday. With this new “helper application,” customers will no longer need to manually transfer their eMusic downloads to their iTunes, Windows Media Player or Winamp library. During a simple installation process, they select their preferred media library and player and all subsequent eMusic downloads will be automatically added to the respective library. This means that immediately after downloading, users can gain access to their tracks in iTunes, Windows Media Player or Winamp and seamlessly transfer them to digital devices or burn to CD.

All eMusic audiobooks customers and any customers currently using the eMusic Download Manager will be encouraged to install the new application, which provides an integrated browsing and downloading experience by eliminating the need to switch between the former eMusic Download Manager and the eMusic website on an external browser. eMusic Remote enables customers to monitor the status of downloading tracks as they simultaneously browse the eMusic site for music and audiobooks.

eMusic Remote is built on top of Mozilla’s XULRunner technology. As a result, many add-ons developed for Firefox will work within eMusic Remote, and anyone can develop new add-ons for the application. On day one, eMusic Remote will work with popular Firefox add-ons such as FoxyTunes, Talk Sidebar, MR Tech Local Install, NoScript, TwittyTunes and Wordpress.com Sidebar. The lead developer on eMusic Remote is Mel Reyes, author of Hacking Firefox: More Than 150 Hacks, Mods, and Customizations (Wiley Books, 2005), a top editor for Mozilla Add-ons submission at the addons.mozilla.org project, and developer of 11 add-ons that support Mozilla-based applications. More than 50 additional add-ons from Firefox community developers have been tested to work with eMusic remote and will be released in the coming weeks.

“eMusic Remote will make downloading easier for our customers and give the open source community a foundation for innovating new applications that work with eMusic,” said Cedric Deniau, eMusic Chief Technology Officer. “Now, not only can our customers purchase tracks in the open MP3 format, but we have also opened up our code base to enable the developer community to enhance the consumer experience of discovering and downloading music by building new extensions and contributing to our open source platform.”

eMusic Remote is licensed under LPGL and can be downloaded at (http://www.emusic.com/remote/). Developers may submit enhancements and patches at (http://developer.emusic.com/) and access the code base at (http://code.google.com/).
