|Both Doreen Orion and her husband, Tim, are psychiatrists. So you’d think they’d be too sane to spend a year driving a motor home around America with a sixty-pound dog and two cranky cats. Not so, as Orion proves in her new memoir about their life-changing trip: Queen of the Road: The True Tale of 47 States, 22,000 Miles, 200 Shoes, 2 Cats, 1 Poodle, a Husband, and a Will of Its Own (Broadway, June 2008).
In fact, when Tim first announced he wanted to "chuck it all" and travel the country in a converted bus for a year, Doreen wanted to know, "Why can't you be like a normal husband in a midlife crisis and have an affair or buy a Corvette?" But, Doreen (who has been called the Elizabeth Gilbert Antichrist, since she had to be dragged kicking and screaming on the trip) did eventually surprise them both, reluctantly agreeing to the journey - and no agenda. As it turns out, this offbeat and hilarious road trip which included fire, flood, and armed robbery, peaks when Orion’s converted bus pulls into a nudist park where everyone, including the maintenance man, struts around in his or her birthday suit - although he did have on a toolbelt. Doreen says, "It was a lesson in getting out of my comfort zone, in letting it all hang out, so to speak. And, believe me: You haven't lived until you've tried naked karaoke."
She shares the experience in her new video trailer for her book that you can see at http://www.queenoftheroadthebook.com/orion-video-rv.htm/. For more information or to schedule an interview with the author, visit Orion’s Web site, http://www.QueenOfTheRoadTheBook.com/.
