February 06 2008 -ARMSTRONG SUPPORTS JUAN MUÑOZ RETROSPECTIVE AT TATE MODERN
Armstrong Commercial Floors UK is providing the optical flooring for one of the key works for Juan Muňoz A Retrospective, an exhibition which opened on Thursday 24 January at Tate Modern.
Armstrong is a global leader in the manufacture of residential and commercial floor products, with a portfolio which includes resilient sheet and tile, laminates, hardwood, Genuine Linoleum, speciality carpet and sports flooring.
Spanish artist Juan Muňoz (1953-2001) is one of the foremost contemporary sculpture and installation artists of our time. One of his most important works, ‘The Wasteland’, utilises Armstrong’s Uni Walton linoleum in three colours - Black 19280, Zinc 19252 and Yellow Corn 19274 – which is cut into interlocking shapes to form a patterned, optical floor that is central to the work. The piece was first exhibited in America in 2001, with the flooring supplied at that time by Armstrong World Industries.
Juan Muňoz A Retrospective is on display at Tate Modern in London from 24 January-27 April 2008. The exhibition will travel in 2009 to a number of other venues in Europe.
Armstrong’s support includes the production of the flooring, specialist cutting and shipping to the UK. The piece is fixed to a sub-floor of tongue and groove panels which is designed to travel easily to all future exhibition venues.
Uni Walton linoleum is the flooring for aesthetes and is widely regarded as the ‘architect’s darling’. Its purist single colour enhances the quality of space, making it a convincing product for public buildings such as museums, entrance halls and higher education establishments.
Tom Ferrell, Armstrong Marketing Manager North West Europe commented; “We are delighted to support Juan Muňoz A Retrospective by providing the flooring for ‘The Wasteland’. Armstrong’s products are well known for their exceptional quality and the aesthetic appeal of Uni Walton makes the product especially suitable for dramatic sculptural installations. We are sure that the exhibition will be very well received at Tate Modern and the overseas locations to which it will travel to in 2009.”
ENDS 24 January 2008
