May 8,2008 – As responsibilities at work and in the family grow, people in UK are rushing and that is creating more accidents and road rage. The findings are the latest from research done by Carrentals.co.uk.
The car-hire comparator company polled 800 drivers in the UK to assess their lifestyle and found that 60% constantly were in a hurry while going off to work. Fourty-three percent even said that they engaged in reckless driving while driving hastily.
As time has become more of a precious commodity in today’s fast-paced society, about 30% of the drivers brought out the fact they were not able to concentrate while driving hastily. And a tenth of those surveyed said that they had gotten into accidents as a result.
Some drivers described running into a lamppost, crashing head-on into another car, going over the speed limit and even hitting pedestrians crossing in the marked crossing area.
Road rage has become another by-product of rushed living. About a tenth of the drivers in UK were linked to incidents that involved road rage, while they were late to appointments. Some drivers described being followed or flashed, while other reported violence and abusive behaviour on the car and on the driver. In general, the survey found that stress resulting from daily routines are a causative factor for bad behaviour on the roads.
Of all the concerns that drivers were most worried about, business meetings were on top of the category. Fourty-one percent said that was their major reason for going above the speed limit- so they would not be late for meetings. Drivers also expressed stress over delays in picking up their children from school. Signing in to work was another cause of stress and worry on drivers’ minds. Also in the area of family relationships, drivers were anxious about being late for romantic dinners planned with their partners.
The respondents also said that hurrying was a way of life for them on an every day basis. They described themselves as rushing while eating meals, doing work around the house, spending quality time with friends and giving kids a helping hand with homework. Six percent said they even rushed sex.
