 23 June 2008 – Carrentals.co.uk, the top car hire price comparator in the UK, conducted a survey with 1,000 of its customers. The participants of the survey were asked to select their favourite driving instructors from a list of celebrities. As a way to show the company’s commitment to road safety, the survey was conducted to remind people that quality driving instructions can help improve safety on the road. The Department of Transport in the UK revealed that more than 70 people are hurt by road accidents in Britain everyday.
Topping the list of famous people in the survey were actor George Clooney and Channel 5 newsreader Natasha Kaplinsky, who were voted as the ideal driving instructors. Clooney was also the top choice among women who belong to the 55 and under age group. After Clooney, Richard Branson got the highest number of votes, followed by Trevor MacDonald, Shane Richie, Peter Kay and Simon Cowell in 3rd to 6th places. The cool composure of MacDonald made him a favourite among women who are 55 and older.
For the men, Kaplinsky was the overall winner. Second place went to Kylie Minogue, who was also chosen as the favourite driving instructor among male drivers aged 25 to 44 years old. Jo Brand got the 3rd spot, followed by Sharon Osborne, Barbara Windsor and Jordan who took the 4th, 5th and 6th spots respectively. Osborne was the most preferred instructor among male drivers aged between 17 and 24 years old.
According to Carrentals.co.uk Managing Director Gareth Robinson, a driver’s abilities are dependent on how good his driving instructor is. He said that although there are people who say that they can drive better on normal days than when they are going through their driving exams, those drivers who are given the right instructions will have sound basics that can help them improve in the future. Robinson also stressed that while the survey was carried out in a light-hearted way, it was actually part of the company’s effort to promote road safety by highlighting the importance of good driving instructors.
