Grand opening of the language exchange SNS "lang-8" !

United States(prwindow)- October 04 2007 -"Lang-8" is quite a new type of Social Networking Service (SNS) It is a site for language exchange and international communication. When using this site, you can write a diary in the language you are studying and other users (native speakers of the language you are studying) can correct your diary. You can also correct the diaries of those who are studying your native language. In this way, you are not only able to learn a language, but also help teach others your native tongue.

"Lang-8" is quite a new type of Social Networking Service (SNS)
It is a site for language exchange and international communication.

When using this site, you can write a diary in the language you are studying and other users (native speakers of the language you are studying) can correct your diary.
You can also correct the diaries of those who are studying your native language.
In this way, you are not only able to learn a language, but also help teach others your native tongue.

For example, if a Japanese user is studying English and an American user is studying Japanese, then the American can correct the English-written diary entries of the Japanese, and the Japanese, in turn, can correct the Japanese-written diary entries of the American.

This system helps to make teaching one's native language simpler and it takes less time than traditional teaching methods.
It is also very beneficial to be taught and corrected by a native speaker of the language you are studying.
Using lang-8, users can teach and learn a language as well as have cultural exchanges with each other.

The Lang-8 interface is currently translated into three languages: English, Chinese, and Japanese. In the future, we plan to add language interfaces for: French, Korean, Spanish, Thai, and Vietnamese among others.
Currently we have users from about 50 countries. Most of them are from: China, France, Japan, Spain, South Korea, and the USA.
It is easy to make corrections to diaries in your native language. For instance, you can highlight errors in one colour and make clear suggestions in another. In this manner mistakes are easily explained and the diary writer can easily understand his or her errors and improve.
Lang-8 also has many of the same features one finds in other well known Social Networking Services.
It is free to register for Lang-8.
All of its service s are free.

Xi, the developer of lang-8, was born in China, but grew up in Japan.

He studied abroad in Shanghai from 2004 to 2005.

In order to improve his Chinese, Xi wrote diaries in Chinese using the computer program "Word".

At first, he was only able to write 2 or 3 lines, but after 1 year was able to write almost 2 pages.

Of course just writing in his diary he couldn't know whether his Chinese was correct or not.

It was especially hard to know and use delicate nuances correctly.

At this point, he started asking his Chinese friends to correct his diaries.

Having a native speaker correct the diaries that he put a lot of effort into writing, was very helpful for studying and made it easier to learn.

In Shanghai, there are many students who studied with each other, like a language exchange.

He thought it would be very fun to do the same kind of language exchange on the internet.
Many people exchange languages with each other all over the world.

In most cases these people exchanged in a 1 to 1 ratio, (two people exchanging letters or emails and practicing their language skills.)
Then they encounter the problem of how to show corrections in each others writing and add suggestions or corrections.
Trying to find time to do this is often difficult and many of these people get discouraged. So, Lang-8 offers a solution to this problem where people can easily correct each others writing and with many, many native speakers in each language no one needs to wait a long time to have their writing corrected. This is the merit of Lang-8.

This is why he came up with the idea of lang-8.

We want to spread lang-8 all over the world, helping international communication and language exchange.
We believe lang-8 is a very good tool for education and will promote international communication.

Thank you for taking the time to read about Lang-8.
