Williamsport, November 29, 2007 – Patients the world over have been experiencing exceptional pain relief from the use of a simple mirror box and now this revolutionary treatment is recognized by the New England Journal of Medicine as a viable treatment for rehabilitation and pain management.
The New England Journal of Medicine conducted a study and its results in the November 22, 2007 issue of the journal. “..the mirror box therapy reduced phantom limb pain...” says the journal, “...visual input of what appears to be movement of the amputated limb might reduce the activity of systems that perceive protopathic pain.”

The mirror box essentially 'tricks' the brain into thinking the patient is moving the affected limb. The patient places his or her injured limb into the box. The reflection of the healthy limb is seen by the patient as a virtual image of the less than functional limb. The brain sees the affected limb as normal, thus resulting in a vast reduction of pain and increased motor function.
“My patient developed what appeared to be early stage CRPS in his right hand following shoulder surgery and a period of immobilization.” says M. Cole, PTA in Oregon, “As part of a comprehensive treatment protocol, he performed mirror box exercises for approximately 15 minutes, three days a week. It's my feeling that the mirror box therapy had a significant impact on this patient's recovery.”
Patients recovering from a stroke, benefit tremendously by practicing symmetrical movements within the mirror box. This treatment has shown improvement in motor functions of the affected limb and significant acceleration in recovery.
