December 21 2007 -New book, "Micaela Morris in Jo's Heaven and Other Stories" by John Howard Reid, is set mainly in the Country Club of a small town in Kentucky.
"You can't set a story in a Country Club," argued my publisher.
"Why ever not?"
"Country Clubs hold no appeal for average readers. They can't afford the subscription fees and they've no interest in playing golf or tennis anyway."
"I served as a director of a Country Club for many years. I don't intend to let all that experience go to waste. Besides, my lead character is the manager of a Country Club. A fascinating woman!"
"A real person?"
"Yes."
"Then you can't use her. She could sue us!"
"That's not likely. I married her. Besides, I'm telling the stories from her point of view."
"You can't do that either! You'll confuse our readers. Readers expect a male author to use a male perspective."
So my publisher and I parted company. I contacted Lulu Books and published the book myself.
